Chemistry AS Level at Ilkley Grammar School

Course description

The aim of the course: To develop an advanced knowledge of the fundamental concepts of Chemistry along with a range of practical skills through context based learning. Ideas are introduced in a spiral way with an emphasis on an investigational and problem solving approach.

Entry requirements

General entry requirement for Post-16: 5 grade 4/C at GCSE, preferably including English and Maths. Specific entry requirements: Grade 6 in GCSE Chemistry or Trilogy Science. Grade 6 in Maths.

Assessment

Fundamentals of Chemistry (110 marks, 2hr 15min written paper) 41% of A Level
Scientific Literacy in Chemistry (100 marks, 2hr 15min written paper) 37% of A level
Practical Skills in Chemistry (60 marks, 1hr 30min written paper) 22% of A Level
Practical Endorsement in Chemistry (On-going assessment over the two year course of practical skills) reported as a separate certificate.

Most of our students go on to study science based degrees, including: medicine, veterinary science, dentistry, pharmacy, biochemistry, engineering and chemical engineering, natural sciences, chemistry, biology and physics: Examples of recent successes:
