Music A Level at Ilkley Grammar School

Course description

AS and A Level music directly support progression to further and higher education in music and related subjects, as well as providing all students with a platform to inspire a lifelong interest and enjoyment of, music.

Course content

Component 1: Appraising Music
(Listening and Written Paper)
120 marks
Section A: Listening (56 marks)
Section B: Analysis (34 marks)
Section C: Essay (30 marks)

Component 2: Performance
(externally marked) 50 marks
A minimum of 10 minutes of performance is required.

Component 3: Composition
(externally marked) 50 marks
2 compositions (one brief-led and the other
free choice). A minimum of 4 minutes 30
seconds is required.

Entry requirements

General entry requirement for Post-16: 5 grade 4/C at GCSE, preferably including English and Maths. Specific entry requirements: Grade 4 in GCSE music or Grade 5 practical in chosen instrument/voice.

Assessment

Component 1: 40%
Component 2: 35%
Component 3: 25%

Future opportunities

Music based courses post-18 but also any Arts, Social Sciences, Science pathway.
