Extended Project Qualification at Cowes Enterprise College

Course description

The EPQ is an inspiring qualification whereby students choose an area of interest in order to carry out their own research and develop the skills required for university level study.

The EPQ is awarded UCAS points worth half an A-level and is recognised by universities and employers. This qualification is popular with University admissions tutors and may result in a better offer from a University, giving students an advantage
during the admissions process. Some leading universities, such as Southampton University, make alternative offers to students undertaking an EPQ.

At Cowes, we provide a comprehensive programme, supported by experts from Southampton University. Timetabled, taught sessions develop the skills needed to complete this project such as time management, report writing, research skills, thinking skills, presentation skills and critical self-reflection.

The EPQ is a very independent course as students choose the topic plan, execute and report the work. As a result it leads students to gain genuine enthusiasm and interest in their work and study and become more self-motivated and organised in
preparation for University.

Course content

The EPQ requires students to carry out research on a topic that they have chosen and is not covered by their other qualifications. They then use this research to produce a written report and, in the case of practical projects, an artefact or a production. A student can take inspiration from something studied in class or something completely unrelated to their studies.
