Physics A Level at Wheatley Park School

Course description

Physics is the study of the Universe, encompassing the smallest subatomic particles and the largest galaxies. The A Level course develops some topics studied at GCSE in far greater depth, and introduces some new ideas.

Physics has especially close ties to Chemistry and Mathematics, but the analytical skills developed to understand scientific phenomena will complement any pursuit of knowledge.

Course content

AS Level Physics includes:

Electric Circuits
Waves and Particle Nature of Light

A Level Physics includes the topics 1-4 above, as well as:

Further Mechanics
Electric and Magnetic Fields
Nuclear and Particle Physics
Nuclear Radiation
Gravitational Fields

All topics include aspects of Working as a Physicist and require appropriate mathematical skills.

Entry requirements

The basic entry requirement for Level 3 courses in Wheatley Park Sixth Form is to complete 8 GCSEs or equivalent, including a minimum of grade 4 in five subjects which must include English and Mathematics.



Three written exams:
Paper 1 (90 marks, 105 min) will cover topics 1-2 & 5-7. Paper 2 (90 marks, 105 min) will cover topics 3-4 & 8-12.
Paper 3 (120 marks, 150min) will cover all topics, and will also assess conceptual and theoretical understanding of experimental methods.
