Further Mathematics A Level at Philip Morant School and College

Course description

A Level Further Mathematics is often a pre-requisite for entry into many higher education courses such as medicine, accountancy, and STEM courses. Many studies show that students who study these subjects at university often go on to earn significantly above the national average wage.

Complementary subjects

The natural sciences, particularly Physics, all have a significant amount of mathematics in them, and you will find the skills you learn in both Maths and Further Maths transfer nicely. Also, by virtue of doing twice as much maths as is in the regular A Level, you will likely find you get lots of opportunity to hone your skills in things such as calculus. Consequently, students who study Further Maths at A Level often achieve top grades in their regular A Level maths.


This course is based at the University of Essex as part of the VI6 collaboration. You will be taught by A-level teachers from the partner schools as well as have access to an extended range of resources and opportunities made available by the university setting. Transport between sites is provided.

Course content

In the first year you will study the compulsory unit Further Pure Maths 1 where you will study proof, complex numbers and matrices. You will also study one of four optional modules from Further Pure Maths 2, Further Mechanics 1, Further Statistics 1 or Further Decision Maths 1.

In the second year you will study the compulsory unit Further Pure Maths 3 where you will study polar co-ordinates, hyperbolic functions and differential equations. You will also study one of four optional modules from Further Pure Maths 4, Further Mechanics 1 or 2, Further Statistics 1 or 2 or Further Decision Maths 1 or 2.

Entry requirements

An analytical mind, and a hunger to solve logic problems are a must. A GCSE grade 7, preferably a grade 8/9 is required. Exposure to GCSE Further Maths will also give you a great foundation for this course. Due to the demanding nature of this course, the ability to show working clearly and performing to tight deadlines are essential.

Future opportunities

Students who study Maths and Further Maths typically go on to higher education at Russell Group universities, where they will study Maths, Statistics, Engineering, Physics, Economics or Medicine. Career opportunities for graduates in these fields include finance, engineering and computing amongst others.
