BTEC L2 Technical Diploma in Animal Care at Northfleet School for Girls

Course description

The Northfleet Community Farm
provides the perfect setting for
students looking to develop their
knowledge and experience of
keeping and caring for a range of
different animals. This qualification
allows learners to develop
knowledge whilst practising the
skills and behaviour that could be
used within employment in the
animal care industry.
This qualification has been
developed in consultation with
employers in the animal care sector
to ensure it enables learners to
develop the skills and behaviours
that will give them the best
opportunity to be successful when
applying for work.
The areas learners will cover
include:
• practical animal health
• animal biology and health
• animal care work placement
• animal welfare
• animal behaviour assessment and
safe handling
• feeding, accommodation and
moving animals.

Students should have a keen
interest in animals and not be
afraid to muck in and get their
hands dirty! There is a balance of
theory and practical in areas such
as maintaining animal health and
welfare, feeding, maintaining animal
environments, animal handling
and the basics of animal biology,
so students should be prepared to
complete both the coursework and
practical elements of assessment.
