Football Academy - VTCT Diploma in Sports Studies - Level 2 at Herne Bay High School

Course description


Herne Bay High Football Academy is run in conjunction with Chelsea Football Club. Students have the opportunity to train and play at Chelsea’s Cobham Training Ground and on occasion get to work with the pro’s undertaking their UEFA A Coaching Licence. The Football Academy is a stand-alone programme staffed by UEFA A and B Licensed Coaches holding full Qualified Teacher Status. They have considerable experience of delivering sport science programmes and working in professional football developing young elite players. Six hours a week is dedicated to training and playing.

The VTCT Level 2 Diploma in Sports Studies (QCF) is a vocational qualification that will support progression towards Level 3 qualifications. This qualification is designed for learners aged 16 years or over and provides the necessary knowledge, understanding and skills to pursue a career in sport and related disciplines. This qualification covers the core topic areas of sport including: anatomy and physiology, performance psychology, and planning and leading coaching activities.

This is a work-related course that can also lead to progression onto level 3 courses. Students will gain the key knowledge and practical skills required in the sports domain. The course involves studying 6 units of work over 1 year and all are assessed by coursework. Coursework assessments include written assignments, presentations and practical demonstrations.

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs grades in the range of A*- E/9-2 (Including Maths and English at grade D/3 or above). Although not essential, applicants are expected to be playing at a good level of competitive football or demonstrate the ability to do so. Trials are part of the application process.

Successful candidates are required to purchase Chelsea Training Kit to be worn as uniform

3 Planning & Leading Sports Activities

Develop the knowledge, understanding and skills required for successful planning and leading of sports activity sessions and events.


4 Business Skills in Sport

Develop the knowledge, understanding and skills required to support an effective sport and leisure business operation.


5 Sports Nutrition

Develop your knowledge and understanding of the nutritional requirements needed for specific sports to maximise and enhance performance.


6 Planning & Running Sports Events

Develop the knowledge, understanding and skills required to plan, contribute to the organisation of, and review the success of a chosen

sporting event.
