Biology - International Baccalaureate at Holmesdale School
The International Baccalaureate Biology builds on concepts and skills developed in GCSE Science. The course aims to: develop enthusiasm for the subject, encourage an appreciation of how society makes decisions about scientific issues and how science contributes to the success of the economy and society, develop an ability to analyse, evaluate and synthesis scientific information, develop an essential knowledge and understanding of dfferent areas of the subject and their relation to each other.
Organisms exchange substances with their environment
Genetic information, variation and relationships between organisms
Energy transfers in and between organisms
Organisms respond to changes in their internal and external environments.
Genetics, populations, evolution and ecosystems.
The controle of gene expression
Human and animal physiology
Grade 4+ in English and Maths, Biology or Additional Science.
This is a linear course and students will sit all exams at the end of the 2- year course.
Paper 1: 40 multiple choice questions 1 hour exam worth 20% of final grade.
Paper 2: Data-based, short answer and extended response questions, 2 hours 25 mins exam worth 36% of the final grade.
Paper 3: Data-based, short answer and extended response questions, 1 hou 25 minutes exam worth 24% of final grade.
Individual investigation - investigation and write up of 6 - 12 pages.
This qualification opens the door to a wide range of career opportunities and pathways including: biochemistry, forensic science, biomedical science, medicine, pharmacy, veterinary studies, biology and sports science.
