Chemistry - International Baccalaureate at Holmesdale School
The International Baccalaureate Diploma in Chemistry builds on GCSE Chemistry or Additional Science and aims to encourage you to study Chemistry in modern concepts, shows how you can link different ideas together, develop practical and analytical skills.
Physical Chemistry: Atomic structure, bonding, energetics and kinetics; thermodynamics; chemical equilbrium, oxidation and reduction; rate equations, electroode potentials; acids and bases.
Inorganic Chemistry: Periodicity; properties and trends in Groups 2 and 7; properties of Period 3 elements; transition metals; reactions of ions.
Organic Chemistry: Alkanes; halo alkanes, alkenes and alcohols; organic analysis; optical isomerism; adlehydes, ketones and carboxylic acids; aromatic chemistry; amines; polymers; amino acide, proteins and DNS; organic synthesis; nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy; chromatography.
Options subjects: Students will be required to study one of the following options. Materials, Biochemistry, Energy, Medicinal chemistry.
Grade 5+ in GCSE English, Maths and Chemistry or Additional Science.
This is a linear course and students will sit all exams at the end of the 2 year course.
Paper 1: A 1 hour exam consisting of 40 multiple choice questions from across the curriculum.
Paper 2: A 2 hour 25 minutes exams consisting of short answer and extended response questions on their chosen option subject.
Paper 3: Data and practical based questions for 1 hour 25 minutes on their chosen options.
In addition students will also be required to produce and write up a full investigation of 6 - 12 pages on an assinged topic. This will account for 20 % of their final grade.
