Entry requirements

5 GSCE grades A*-C / 9-5. Students must also achieve at least C grade in a technology or design based subject.

Assessment

Paper 1 Core technical principles and designing and making principles.

This is a written exam that the students sit at the end of year 12 which is worth 50% of their AS. It consists of a combination of multiple choice, short and extended responses.

Paper 2 Specialist knowledge, technical and designing and making principles.

This consists of two written examinations taken at the end of the course in year 2. Both these examinations contribute a total of 50% of the final A level grade (25% each).

Coursework (Non exam assessment)

Practical application of technical principles, designing and making principles and specialist knowledge.

Students work on a substantial design and make project throughout year 13. Using the knowledge and skills built up during the course students create problem solving designs for a real life situation. They then select the best design and make it. The project may be either graphical or a working artefact.
