BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate/Diploma in Creative Media - Digital Games (2 A level equivalent) at Huddersfield New College

Course description

You will study topics relating to the media and gaming industry, topics covered include:

  • Digital game production
  • 3D animation
  • 3D environments
  • Media campaigns
  • Responding to a commission
  • Digital media skills

Course content

You will make digital games, from initial concept to design, development and programming. In doing so, you will start to develop the technical skills to work in the games industry.  You will learn to work together in teams, and also individually, to complete vocational projects. 

You will study the various roles and responsibilities in the games industry, from technical artists and games developers, to programmers and games testers, and how these individuals work together to create games.  You will learn to write proposals and pitches for a commission, and to develop a games treatment outlining your ideas and concepts, as well as developing your production skills. 

Through optional units, you will develop technical skills in 3D animation and programming, and gain the skills to turn your concepts into reality using industry standard software including 3D Autodesk Maya and Unreal Engine 4.

Entry requirements

A Grade 4 in GCSE Media Studies and/or Art is desirable.

Assessment

Assessment is by coursework.

Please note the awarding body for all BTEC qualifications recently made the decision to extend the current BTEC courses in our offer beyond 2018.  This means that for 2018 entry, all Level 3 vocational subjects will continue to be assessed by coursework only, with the exception of Art and Design.

Future opportunities

There is potential for you to progress on to a wide range of university degrees leading to careers in games design, level design, animation, concept art and many other media and graphic related subjects.  You will develop skills in formal writing, team working and pitching ideas.  You will also develop a wide variety of skills valuable in a wide range of occupations and activities.
