Music A Level at Manshead CE Academy
The Music course for A-level students demands performing, composing and appraising skills in almost equal measure. Students will improve their skills in performing and composing in a range of styles. They will listen to a wide variety of music and develop a more informed appreciation of how and why it was written and/or performed. Students will be assessed through a combination of external exams and internal coursework.
Component 1: Performing 30%
Component 2: Composing 30%
Component 3: Appraising 40%
The units studied are assessed through a combination of internal and external methods.
Components 1 and 2 will be assessed as course work during year 2. Component 3 is a written exam lasting two hours.
Students should have already gained grade A* - C or 9-4 in GCSE Music and should be able to perform on a musical instrument or voice to a minimum standard equivalent to Grade 5. A good understanding of theory is essential.
The course will develop a deeper understanding of a wide range of music and help those students hoping to study Music in Higher Education. It gives experience to those who wish to pursue a vocation in Music.
