Product Design A Level at Manshead CE Academy

Course description

The specification has been designed to encourage candidates to take a broad view of technology and design, to develop their capacity to design and make products and to appreciate the complex relations between design, materials, manufacture and marketing. Two material areas are given in the Subject Content, 3D Design and Textiles. 3D Design is intended to reflect the wideranging activities of professional designers covering a wide range of materials. It also allows students to develop their own designs and prototypes.

Course content

Unit 1: Materials, Components and Application (PROD1). This paper is based primarily on Materials and Components. Unit 2: Learning Through Designing and Making (PROD2). It is approximately 50 hours of individual study Unit 3: Design and Manufacture (PROD3). This is a two-hour written paper worth 25% of the total ‘A’ level marks. This paper is based primarily on Design and Manufacture Unit 4: Design and Making Practice (PROD4). This is a coursework module consisting of approximately 60 hours of individual study. Students have to complete a design folder of a manufactures outcome.

Entry requirements

Grade 4 or better in an Art or Technology subject

This course prepares students for careers in a wide range of areas including careers in the Arts, Graphic Design, Product Design, Theatre Design Industrial Design, Architecture, Landscape Design, Interior Design, Media, Marketing, Building and Construction, ICT, Advertising, Engineering and the Print Industry.
