Course Outline BTECs provide a high quality vocational education that provides students with a solid practical-based understanding of science that equips them for further study in many sciences. The qualification offers active learning in a vocational context and builds confidence, competence and motivation.
The BTECs in Applied Science are recognised by employers, professional institutions and higher education establishments and are closely attuned to the needs of the employers in the science marketplace. The course covers aspects of Biology, Chemistry and Physics, focusing on investigatory and analysis skills. 6 compulsory Units are completed, and 7 or 13 optional units. Optional units could include Human Biology, Biochemical Techniques, Astronomy and Medical Physics for example.
The BTEC course is 60% comprised of coursework assignments that are marked by the teacher and 40% externally marked projects and exams. The assignments incorporate a range of skills including practical, research and mathematical analysis.
The course, depending on the grade achieved can lead pupils into science based degrees or science careers. Employers recognise the value of the BTEC qualification and it is widely recognised. Recent university courses students studied after BTEC at Corelli College include: Human Nutrition, Psychology, Biomedical Science, Pharmacy, Games Technology and Sports Science.
