Physics A Level at Corelli College Co-Operative Academy
Over this engaging and inspiring two year course, you will study the theories and concepts of Physics, for example Particles, Quantum Phenomena and Electricity. From Particle Physics you will develop your knowledge and delve into the fields of Mechanics, Nuclear and Thermal Physics.
This A Level Physics course gives students a seamless transition from GCSE to university courses in Physics and Physics-related disciplines. It maintains students’ enthusiasm for Physics and develops their interest in this stimulating subject. Practical investigations, based on ‘How Science Works’, offers practical and investigative experience throughout the two years of study.
There is a choice of optional topics in the second year including Astrophysics and Medical Physics which enable students to develop a stronger understanding of these ever-advancing fields of investigation which are fundamental to the development of modern life.
Minimum of a B in all GCSE Science papers and a minimum of an A in GCSE Maths. Physics students also need to be studying Maths A Level
As with all Ofqual-regulated schools across the country, both the AS and A Level are linear courses. The AS qualification is a one-year course. The A Level course is a two year course.
AS: One year course with 2 x 1hr 30min written exams at the end of the year. Both are 70 marks each with 15% is based on the practical skills and knowledge gained throughout the year and 40% of the questions are maths-based.
Advanced Level: Two year course with 3 x 2hr written exams at the end of the year. The weighting is 34:34:32 respectively, also with 15% is based on the practical skills and knowledge gained throughout the year and 40% of the questions are maths-based.
Physics is a solid choice for students considering a career in Medicine, Veterinary Science, Dentistry, Computing, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics and Environmental Science. Physics will also prepare students for industry careers, such as those within the engineering or electronics sectors.
