Extended Project Qualification at Bingley Grammar School
An Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) is a qualification which can be taken by A-Level students.
The EPQ is a self-motivated project that carries the same UCAS points as an AS level, and allows students to choose an area of interest to study which supports their chosen A level subjects.
An EPQ can help your university application and students are often asked about their EPQ at university interviews. The EPQ process also involves several skills lessons, where you will learn different ways to carry out research, record findings, and how to move to the next stage of the project – all of which are valuable skills which will stand you in good stead for university study.
Students must choose a topic to plan, research and develop and decide on their finished product - creativity and curiosity is encouraged.
A finished product may take the form of a:
- research based written report (5,000 words)
- production* (eg charity event, fashion show or sports event etc)
- an artefact* (eg piece of art, a computer game or realised design).
*A written report of 2,000-3,000 words must accompany these options.
We recommend students undertake the research based report as we have had the most successes following this option.
Students must also record their project process in their Production Log. The process of recording and completing a project is as important as the finished product. Both the Production Log and Product will be assessed.
Getting an EPQ takes time, self-discipline and independent research - guidance and support will be provided by one of our mentors.
We launch the EPQ in late June/early July trying to match students with supervisors before the summer break such that an initial research meeting can be held so the students make the most of the time available over summer to get started. Although we endeavour to match students with subject specialists this is not an absolute requirement and does not impact the grades obtained.
