Government and Politics A Level at St Joseph's College

Course description

This course covers how the governments of the UK, the US, and the wider world work.

The principles of government, the ideas of politics, the debates over policy, and the circumstances which have led to the political situation we now find ourselves in are all explored.

Students learn to analyse the policy decisions that hit the news and start to assess the strengths and weaknesses of politicians.

In addition, students examine the ways in which political ideas have changed over the years.

Course content

  • Paper 1: UK Politics – Political Participation; Core Political Ideas.
  • Paper 2: UK Government – Constitution, Parliament and Prime Minister; Optional Political Ideas.
  • Paper 3: Comparative Politics – US Constitution, Presidency and Government, comparison with the UK.

Entry requirements

  • 6+ in GCSE English
  • 5+ in a literacy subject (e.g. Business Studies, History, Geography, Religious Studies)

Assessment

Paper 1 – 2 hours

Paper 2 – 2 hours

Paper 3 – 2 hours
