Extended Project AS Level at Burford School and Community College

Course description

The Extended Project (EPQ) is offered to students who have high academic expectations and/or a passion about a particular subject that they wish to develop further.

Entry requirements

Anyone considering applying to take this qualification must have demonstrated their ability to study independently and be self-motivated. Students who have a record of missed deadlines will not be considered.

The Extended Project is recommended for anyone who is predicted the highest ‘A’ Level grades and considering an application to a highly competitive university. It is also recommended for anyone who has a deep and abiding interest in a subject which they are keen to explore in more depth.

Assessment

The EPQ is a piece of self-directed work on a topic of the student’s choice. It could be; a design, a report with findings from an investigation, a dissertation presenting an argument (of approx. 5,000 words), an artefact, a performance. It should be emphasised that the assessment is as much to do with the process as the final outcome.

Assessment is on the ability to manage, use resources, develop and realise a project and review the final outcome. The supervisor will assess this process which will then be moderated externally.

Further information

Completion of the project relies on your ability to plan, research and carry out a task autonomously over a prolonged period. You will have a supervisor who will monitor your progress and give you support and advice. There will be weekly meetings with your supervisor and also some ‘taught’ sessions to help you with the skills you may need to complete the topic e.g. research, ICT etc. Submission of the completed projects will be expected in either November or March of Year 13.
