Textiles A level at Davenant Foundation School

Course description

What will you learn in Year 12?

Textiles is a specialised course, which works in the area of constructed textiles, dyed, stitched fabric and fashion, providing you with opportunities to develop your creative skills and experiences whilst exploring a range of techniques and processes.

All projects start by drawing to record experiences and observations in stitch, textiles illustration, materials sampling and other forms. You will develop your practical skills in some of the following techniques: dyeing cloth, batik, fabric construction, stitching, appliqué, patchwork, embroidery, quilting, felting and mixed-media applications. You will be encouraged to visit museums and galleries, as part of your studies, demonstrate initiative and independent learning.

What will you learn in Year 13

The emphasis is on depth of study to produce a portfolio of work from a chosen theme to research and create an innovative response . You will develop your creative thinking and practice of textiles and fabric manipulation investigating a related study of personal interest in an area of craft and or design. (minimum of 1,000 words) Whilst exploring the work of textile designers and artists as your own individual style emerges to produce a high level of design and making skills which will show a greater understanding of techniques and processes.

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs including English Language and Mathematics at A*-C, (or 4-9), Grade 6 or higher at GCSE in Art: Textiles, Art or Textile Technology.

Further information

Students wishing to continue with Textile Design apply for Foundation courses and will then progress to specialised degree courses. Alternatively students apply directly to university to study Design. Studying Textiles will lead to a vast array of careers in Fashion, Textile Design, Interior Design, Costume, Fashion Buying and more.
