Information Technology BTEC Level 3 (Extended Certificate) at The King's School

Course description

This course features a number of units which should challenge and interest young people seeking to extend their education within IT whilst equipping them with a wide range of knowledge and skills relevant to further study and work. The content of this course is highly relevant to the main issues of using and working with IT in a modern context particularly around the overarching influence of the internet on business use of IT.

Course content

Unit 1: IT Systems
Explore the relationships between the hardware & software that form an IT system; the way that systems work individually and together; the relationship between the user and the system.
Unit 2: Creating Systems to manage information
Examine the structure of data and its origins and how an efficient data design follows through to an effective and useful database system.
Unit 3: Using Social Media in Business
Explore how businesses use social media to promote their products and services.

Develop a plan to use social media strategies for business purposes to achieve specific aims and objectives.
Unit 4: Website Development
Investigate website development principles and design and develop a website using scripting languages.

Entry requirements

The minimum grade entry requirement is 5 GCSEs at Grade 4 or above to include Grade 4 or better in English and Maths. Merit in Cambridge Nationals ICT or equivalent (e.g. GCSE ICT)


10 hour supervised coursework task under exam conditions, taken in one week.
2 hour external exam
Two units to solve practical problems assessed as coursework.
