This course will introduce you to the world of technology and computer science through a variety of tailored study units.You will learn the skills necessary to pursue a career as a software or hardware engineer or an app or web developer.
During your first year you will study the following units:
The Online World - Online systems and technology have become part of everyday work, so being able to understand and work with this technology is relevant in many roles in the industry. You will investigate online services and online communication, components of the internet and how digital devices exchange and store information, and issues with operating online.
Technology Systems - An introduction to main building blocks of technology systems work as you will explore key concepts and processes which form the basis of any technology system. This core unit will enable you to understand how the components of technology systems work together, how data flows between internal components of a computer and is processed to provide information, and different types of software.
Digital Portfolio - Showcase your achievements through a digital onscreen portfolio which can be used for future potential employers or course applications. It is all about the projects you have created and developed, your use of communication and presentation skills and your capabilities and potential. In this core unit you will design, create, test and review a digital portfolio that will encompass work from all other units.
Computing in the Workplace - Preparing you for your career in the computing industry, you will understand and demonstrate the personal characteristics valued by employers in the workplace, prepare an application for an IT/computing job role, understand how social media and communication technologies are used in the workplace and demonstrate how social media and communication technologies can be used to improve the delivery of a project.
Software & Web Development - You will begin to design, develop, test and review your own website but you will also learn the many different elements which make up websites; including text, graphics, animation, video and programs (client-side computer scripts).
Multimedia Product Development - Multimedia surrounds us and is playing an ever expanding and increasingly important role in daily life and this unit enables you to understand the uses and features of multimedia products, and you will design, develop, test and review multimedia products.
Computational Thinking - Computers influence much of the world around us and are used to solve a range of problems, including complex problems such as generating the visual effects in films and landing the Curiosity Rover (unmanned robot) on Mars. Computational thinking enables us to solve these problems using mathematics and logic and are skills which are required in any computing career..
Software Systems Development - Start integrating two or more technologies to create a larger software system, examples of integrated software systems include multi-player games and photo-sharing applications like Instagram. You will investigate a range of uses of existing software systems and learn about the importance of testing to quality assure software programs and software systems. You will be able to apply some of your findings when designing, developing, testing and reviewing your own software system.
Four GCSEs at grade D and above with a minimum of a Grade C or 4 and above in Mathematics. A good school reference and a strong interest in computing and associated technologies.You will still continue to develop maths and English alongside your course.
You will be invited to meet one of the course lecturers for an interview, where you will be able to ask more questions.
You will be assessed by your coursework, which could be a combination of assignments, observed practical work or projects and by two controlled external exams. Students are expected to spend additional independent study hours on research and homework in order to successfully complete this programme.
Learners can progress onto a BTEC level 3 Diploma in Computing which can lead to an apprenticeship, higher education or employment within the industry.
