AS course outline

  • Module 1: Development of Practical Skills in Chemistry: You will have many practical opportunities to develop your fundamental skills needed to collect and analyse empirical data.
  • Module 2: Foundations in Chemistry: This module provides you with a knowledge and understanding of: atomic structure, quantitative chemistry, reactions of acids, oxidation number and redox reactions, and bonding and structure.
  • Module 3: Periodic Table and Energy: The focus of this module is inorganic and physical chemistry, the applications of energy use to everyday life and industrial processes, and current environmental concerns associated with sustainability.
  • Module 4: Core Organic Chemistry: This module introduces organic chemistry and its important applications to everyday life: nomenclature and formula representation, functional groups, organic reactions and isomerism, aliphatic hydrocarbons, alcohols and haloalkanes to name a few.

Entry requirements

B or above at GCSE in Chemistry or Additional Science (not BTEC) and Maths.

Further information

Studying chemistry or other natural science at university. Medicine and veterinary medicine.
