Biology A Level at Copthall School

Course description

Biology is the scientific study of life and it involves the investigation of living organisms and life processes. This is a journey of learning that takes us from biological molecules, through to how cells work and from individual organisms to populations and whole communities of animals and plants. A qualification in Biology equips you with skills: Literacy, Numeracy, social awareness, and an ability to make connections between natural, social, economic, political and technological fields.

Course content

Topic 1:  Biological molecules

Topic 2: Cells

Topic 3: Organisms exchange substances with their environment

Topic 4: Genetic information, variation and relationships between organisms

Topic 5: Energy transfers in and between organisms  

Topic 6: Organisms respond to changes in their internal and external environments  

Topic 7: Genetics, populations, evolution and ecosystems  

Topic 8: The control of gene expression  

Entry requirements

Minimum BB in GCSE Science (Core and Additional) or in GCSE Biology and B in GCSE Maths
