Higher Sports Leadership Certificate at East Sussex College

Course description

The HSLC is an exciting course where you complete 7 units of study about sport leadership. You will also complete 30 hours of community sports work with children, and people with disabilities. The units of study include: developing leadership skills, provision of sport within the community, leading sessions designed to improve fitness, organising and leading a sports event or competition, legal and ethical responsibilities when working with others, leading sport/activity sessions for children and leading sport/activity sessions for disabled people. The ability to work in a team is essential.

Entry requirements

You will need to meet our standard entry requirements.

You will need the Community Sports Leadership Award.


This is a practical course and there will be continual assessment throughout. Assessment is based on the skills required for leadership. A sporting background is not a specific requirement. A professional approach to leading and coaching is required throughout the course.There will be an independent assessor who assesses you whilst working through your 30 voluntary hours.

Future opportunities

This course can provide a pathway to teaching, coaching, sports development, sports administration, sports centre work and the leisure industry. This is a nationally recognised qualification and is recognised by Higher Education and the workplace as a course that develops leadership skills.
