Course description

Technology dominates almost every aspect of our lives in the modern world, and the internet plays a key role in all parts of society. Understanding digital technologies and how they can be used effectively is a vital skill to have in a business environment. This introductory course will help you do just that! You’ll develop an extensive and varied range of abilities on this course, all relating to digital technology. You might begin with basic office skills like using email clients, spreadsheets and word processing software, before moving onto techniques associated with mobile devices, e-commerce, website design and imaging software. Throughout the course, you’ll be involved in planning, running and leading a number of different design and publishing projects, which help improve your leadership skills and prepare you for work. You’ll have the chance to study English and Maths, developing your written, verbal and visual communication skills for further qualifications or employment.

Financial information

Coursework will form most of the assessment for this course and will involve a variety of presentations, project work, written pieces, and presentations. If you’re studying English and Maths too, these will be assessed via set exams.

When you’ve completed this course, you’ll be laying the groundwork for a future career in business. You’ll have the opportunity to move onto one of a huge range of Level 2 courses at The Manchester College, focusing on Business or Computing and IT. You’ll be developing a strong set of IT skills for use in any office environment too, whether you want to work in banking or law, retail or the public sector.     • North Manchester Sixth Form is a friendly, vibrant sixth form centre offering courses for school leavers. There are a wide range of courses to choose from, including acting, medical sciences, childcare, business, film production and forensics. The comfortable, environmentally friendly site is made up of a bright modern building and the restored Harpurhey Baths. There is plenty of space to socialise and a large garden. Many of the facilities at North Manchester Sixth Form are open to the community.

      Harpurhey Baths is a Grade II listed building and part of North Manchester Sixth Form. The college has transformed the building into an award-winning exhibition space for students and the community.

      Facilities at North Manchester Sixth Form include:

      • mock aircraft cabin, check in desk, working luggage scales and tannoy system

      Local area

      North Manchester Sixth Form is in Harpurhey, a suburb three miles north of central Manchester. There are a large market, supermarket, shops, fast food chains and a post office nearby. North Manchester Sixth Form is close to Queens Park and Boggart Hole Clough, large community parks hosting events throughout the year. Queens Park has a children’s playground. North City Family and Fitness Centre is five minutes’ walk away and has a health suite and swimming pool.
