Law (Applied) Level 3 BTEC Extended Certificate at Seevic College

Course description

This course is ideal if you are interested in how our democratic law-making system and how the English legal system works.

The learning outcomes of the course involve application of knowledge of dispute solving in the legal system, understanding law making and legal personnel, aspects of legal liability including principles of the tort of negligence and non fatal criminal offences in year one and homicide, property offences, police powers and contract law in year two.

This course provides you with the knowledge to pursue the study of Law to HE and will assist those who wish to enter employment in a related field. This course is taken in place of one A-Level. 

Course content

Modules in year one, National Certificate:

  • Dispute solving in civil law (negligence, legal advice & funding, precedent)
  • Investigating aspects of criminal law and the legal system (including law-making and personnel, non fatal offences and sentencing).

Modules in year two, Extended Certificate:

  • Applying the law (homicide, police powers and property offences)
  • Contract law.

Entry requirements

General Entry Requirements 

Average point score of 5.3, calculated from all GCSE subjects. Your point score MUST include at least five GCSEs at Grade C/4 or above - including English Language or Maths. 

If your English Language is a D/3, your Maths must be at least a C/4 and vice versa.

Specific Entry Requirements 

  • Grade C/5 or above in GCSE English Language.


You will be taught using discussion, small and whole group activities, court visits, guest speakers, practical problem-solving activities & case studies and DVD clips. You will also be invited to participate in mock trials/mooting competitions. 

You will be assessed through a combination of coursework assignments and exams.

Future opportunities

You could progress on to Higher Education to study Law, Criminology or a related subject. You could also enter employment in the legal profession, for example as part of an Apprenticeship.
