Computer Science AS Level at Queens Park Community School
As well as being part of our daily lives, computer science is used to solve society's
most complex and important problems in areas such as engineering, banking, communication, and medicine. Computer Science A level is a creative and wide-ranging course which uses clear logical thinking to design and build systems that really work.
The Year 12 Course
Paper 1 (50% of AS level) - Assessment: 75 minutes
The characteristics of contemporary processors, input, output and storage devices
Software and software development
Data types, data structures and algorithms
Legal, moral, cultural and ethical issues
Paper 2 (50% of AS level) - Assessment: 75 minutes written examination
Elements of computational thinking
Problem solving and programming
Algorithms to solve problems and standard algorithms
You will need to have a grade 6 in Mathematics GCSE, interest in theory and practical
work and preparedness to practise for regular tests.
Computer Science gives you a wide choice of study options across ICT, Computer Science, Information Systems, Multimedia, Software Engineering, Computer Networking, E-Business and Information Management. Computer Science can lead to careers across a wide range of sectors including IT, physics, chemistry, biology, earth sciences, medicine, space exploration, engineering, entertainment, the media, education, business and government because every aspect of our lives involves working with information technology.
