Course description

Economics A level covers the following themes:
Theme 1:
Introduction to markets and market failure, microeconomic concepts.
Nature of economics
How markets work
Market failure
Government intervention
Theme 2:
The UK Economy — performance and policies, macroeconomic concepts.
Measures of economic performance
Aggregate demand and aggregate supply
National income and economic growth
Macroeconomic objectives and policy
Students will take the AS qualification at the end of year 12.

Entry requirements

You will need Mathematics GCSE at grade 6 and English at grade 5. You must be interested in current affairs, willing to read extensively and undertake independent research. Successful students are those that regularly watch the news and are able to apply much of the theory they have been taught. Being confident with mathematical calculations and the ability to develop written responses are key attributes that wil
l help secure a good grade in Economics.


Paper 1 will assess microeconomics and questions will be drawn from themes 1 and 3 (worth 35% of total qualification).
Paper 2 will assess macroeconomics and questions will be drawn from themes 2 and 4 (worth 35% of total qualification). Paper 4 will assess content on all four themes (worth 30% of total qualification).

The assessment of quantitative skills in Economics will include at least GCSE mathematical skills as a minimum of 15% of the overall AS and 20% of the overall A level marks.
