Music AS Level at Queens Park Community School

Course description

Component 1: Performing -30%
A public performance of one or more pieces, performed as a recital.
Performance can be playing or singing solo, in an ensemble, improvising, or realising music using music technology.
The total performance time across all pieces must be a minimum of 6 minutes.
Component 2: Composing - 30%
Total of two compositions, one to a brief set by Pearson and one either free composition or also to a brief.
Each composition must be at least 2 minutes in duration.
Total time across both compositions must be at least 4 minutes and 30 seconds.
Component 3: Appraising - 40%
One written paper of 90 minutes out of 80 marks.
6 areas of study:
Vocal Music
Instrumental Music,
Music for Film
Popular Music and Jazz
New Directions.
Two set works from each area of study are required for AS; students are expected to study the set works at a greater level of depth at A Level.
Although the AS exists as a stand-alone qualification, the decision about whether students will take it will be made during the year based on student choices for A level study.

Entry requirements

Grade 6 in Music GCSE together with grade 5 performance and theory. A commitment to
independent study and regular instrumental practice is vital.
