Applied Science BTEC Level 3 at Birchwood High School

Course description

The AQA Level 3 Applied Science (certificate and extended certificate) consists of five mandatory units, plus a selection of one additional optional unit to be completed over two years.

The mandatory units are

Unit 1: Key Concepts in Science
Unit 2: Applied Experimental Techniques
Unit 3: Science in the Modern World
Unit 4: The Human Body
Unit 5: Investigating Science
Unit 6: Select one option: Microbiology / Medical Physics / Organic Chemistry

Course content

Assignment
Selected mandatory and all optional units.
Programme team creates assignment brief and students carry out set tasks, creating evidence to support a work-related scenario.

Unit 2:
Applied Experimental Techniques
This is a practical based assignment unit. All the experimental techniques will relate to their application in the research and development of new pharmaceutical products, the quality control of existing products and the investigation of new materials, ecological investigations, consideration of the most suitable material to use for a specific application. This unit will be presented as a portfolio and will be internally assessed.

Unit 5:
Investigating Science
The context of the investigation will enable learners to use their knowledge and skills in carrying out a scientific investigation that relates to science in the modern world. Students will carry out an original, extended practical investigation that draws together the knowledge, skills and understanding that they have developed in other units. This unit will be presented as a portfolio and will be internally assessed.

Unit 6:
Option
The students will select one of the following options: Microbiology, Medical Physics or Organic Chemistry. This unit will be presented as a portfolio and will be internally assessed.

Written Exam

Unit 1:
Key Concepts in Science
This will be a mixture of multiple choice and short answer questions, contributing 33.3% of the AQA Level 3 Certificate in Applied Science and 16.6% of the AQA Level 3 Extended Certificate in Applied Science.

Unit 3:
Science in the Modern World.
This is a written exam with pre-released material.
It will be a mixture of multiple choice, short answer and extended answer questions, contributing 33.3% of the AQA Level 3 Certificate in Applied Science and 16.6% of the AQA Level 3 Extended Certificate in Applied Science.

Unit 4:
The Human Body.
This will be a mixture of multiple choice and short answer questions, contributing 33.3% of the AQA Level 3 Certificate in Applied Science and 16.6% of the AQA Level 3 Extended Certificate in Applied Science.

 

Entry requirements

TPS 36 and Grade 4 or above in Science.

Assessment

Assessment is criterion referenced, based on the achievement of specified learning outcomes. Each unit has specified criteria which are used for grading. A summative unit grade can be awarded at pass, merit, distinction or distinction star.
