Level 3 Public Services - Extended Diploma at Keighley College

Course description

This course is suitable for students who would like to work in the uniformed or non-uniformed public services including police, fire, prison and ambulance service, armed forces, probation or crown prosecution service. 

You should aspire to work in a management or senior ranking role and this course is also suitable for those wishing to access higher education at university as this comes with UCAS points and provides a differing more practical route than schools. There is a balance of academic and practical units delivered across the course with opportunities to gain work experience through volunteering with the Police and Fire services in this area. Students on this course are provided opportunities for work experience in Finland and Slovenia and many go on to study at University or to join the uniformed services following this course.

Course content

You will learn about the importance of discipline, teamwork and leadership within the public services and how these things can be affected by government policies.  You will also learn about communication technology in the public services, command and control systems, how to deal with conflict, the impact of crime and the success of crime reduction initiatives nationally and locally. 

You will develop your own leadership style and practice working in teams to solve problems and manage projects.  You will meet and work with personnel currently serving in the public services and participate in various public service fitness tests in preparation for joining. You will also develop your self-reliance and resilience that will help to prepare you for any modern working environment giving you the self-confidence to succeed in your career goals.

Entry requirements

A minimum of 5 GCSEs at Grade 4 or above including English and ideally Maths or a Level 2 Diploma at Merit Grade with GCSE English at Grade 4 or above and ideally Maths.
If you are under 19 and you do not already have English & Maths GCSE grades A-C or equivalent you will be required to undertake GCSE or Functional Skills alongside your main qualification.

Assessment

There are no exams; you will be assessed through coursework.
Assessments methods include online quizzes, discussion forums and blogs, case studies and observations of practical exercises. You can design a website, make a film and write reports as a part of the ongoing assessment. Each unit has its own assessment targets and we use Google classroom to help with access to teaching resources and the handing in of assignments.

Future opportunities

After completing the course you will be able to apply for positions in one of the uniformed or non-uniformed public service or you may choose to progress onto a Higher Education programme.
