Art and Design Level 2 Applied Diploma at Long Road Sixth Form College

Course description

If you have a strong creative desire to access vocational Art and Design, this level 2 diploma will introduce you to working in the sector or prepare you for further vocational study. Art and Design includes many different fields, including graphic design, photography, web design, illustration, fashion and textiles – so there are many career options available.

This course will introduce you to the basic elements of art and design giving you an insight in to the range of choices on offer, whilst developing your own skills, experience and general knowledge.

You will also retake Mathematics and English GCSE if you did not achieve a Grade 4 or above in these.

Course content

During the one-year diploma course, you will have the opportunity to explore a range of disciplines within specialist units including printmaking, textiles, photography, and digital and observational drawing.

The specialist units run alongside 3 core units which are delivered throughout the year.  The course aims to give you a broad range of skill-based techniques so that you have an understanding of a range of mediums and can expand on your particular strengths within the two externally set units.

The two externally set units are: Unit 2, which has a 10-hour assessed time period, and Unit 7, which has a 5-hour assessed time period. You will respond to a theme set by the exam board with preparatory studies completed during studio time.

Entry requirements

Four Grade 3s or equivalent at GCSE including English.

Students enrolling on courses on the Level 2 Applied Programme who have not achieved a Grade 4in English and/or Maths GCSE must retake these. 

Assessment

You will be assessed by a combination of internally-assessed assignments and externally-set and marked assessments.

Future opportunities

The Level 2 Art & Design Diploma can lead to employment within the design field and entry onto the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Art & Design or the Level 3 60-unit Diploma in Graphic Design.
