Motor Vehicle Accident Repair Level 1 at Sheffield College
This is a 1 year full time course.
About this course
Students usually start at level 1 to gain the necessary skills before progressing to level 2.
This level 1 qualification covers the basic technical needs for today’s motor vehicle body and paint industry. It provides essential knowledge for the body refinisher working on a wide range of vehicles in all types of workshops, dealerships and specialist paint shops. The course will cover interpreting vehicle technical information, basic vehicle preparation, vehicle refinishing materials, tools and equipment, vehicle paint application and correcting minor defects. You also gain a broad knowledge and understanding of health and safety in the workplace and other skills associated with working in a garage.
Theory lessons covering the required technology are classroom based, giving you the opportunity to take notes to aid your studies. Practical lessons take place in the motor vehicle workshops and give you the opportunity to develop the skills needed to pass the assessments. You will need to bring your own overalls and safety boots for workshop sessions; all other safety equipment will be provided. You will need to bring a pen,pencil,paper and a folder to every lesson.
You need to attend regularly and be on time for every lesson.
Functional Skills lessons also form an important part of your course.
They include English and Maths to help you improve your skills in these areas. There will be exams when you are ready. The course is approximately 50% theory and 50% practical. Your progress will be reviewed regularly in tutorial sessions
Personal Study Time
You are expected to study independently in your own time, building up your knowledge of motor vehicle body and paint technology.
You will be given passwords for our online learning materials. We have a comprehensive library for you to read suitable textbooks on the subject.

You should have willingness and a desire to study on a motor vehicle course, be able to take in technical information and demonstrate practical ability in a workshop setting.

4 GCSEs at Grade 2 or above including English Language
Knowledge is assessed using on line exams, and also by oral questioning during practical assessments. Practical assessments will be carried out in the Body Repair workshops following training and practice in the required competencies. Students will be required with assistance to build a portfolio of their work.

We have a specialist support team who can give you all the advice you need on all things financial, including what might be available to you, so that you don’t go short and you can concentrate all your efforts into your studies.
If you meet the eligibility criteria we’ll be able to support you with free meals. You’ll get an amount of money that you can use within the college shops and diners per day. This will be added to your student ID card which you will just swipe to purchase items.
Students (including Apprentices) of The Sheffield College who live in South Yorkshire are eligible for a 16–18 Student Pass which entitles pass holders to cheaper travel on buses and trams in South Yorkshire. Pass holders are also entitled to half fare on Northern train services in South Yorkshire.

Where Can It Lead?
Following success in this course you can apply to join a Level 2 Vehicle Body course. Career opportunities include working in Accident Repair establishments as a Body Repair Technician or as a Vehicle Refinisher. You may also apply for a modern apprenticeship.
