A Level Applied ICT at Ricards Lodge High School

Course description

This course brings together a wide range of “in demand” ICT skills that you will be able to use in both the work place and your continuing education. You will extend your knowledge of ICT and is place in society. You will learn about how businesses rely upon the relentless changes in technology to improve their efficiency. You will learn how to create a full suite of professionally produced documents suitable for commercial use. In addition you will improve your skills in database management, spreadsheet design & web site design.

Course content

For AS Level you will study three mandatory subjects: using ICT to Communicate; How Organisations use ICT and ICT Solutions for Individuals and Society.

In year two, to convert to a full A level, you will study three further units: Working to a Brief (mandatory), plus: Numerical Modelling (using spreadsheets to an advanced level) and or Developing and Creating Websites.

Entry requirements

GCSE ICT grade B or higher (or equivalent BTEC Certificate or DIDA qualification). Competency in MS Word, MS Excel, MS Access and MS PPT, Photoshop CS3, Flash CS3, Dreamweaver or Serif Webplus will be beneficial.


Assessment is continuous and includes completion of coursework units for both AS and A2 and an external assessment based on a case study. There are two externally assessed written examinations.

Future opportunities

Career options include graphic designer, programmer, web developer, computer games designer, multimedia production, ICT technician, network management, technical supporter, digital media and marketing, project management.
