Course description

Mathematics is one of the oldest academic subjects but it is still a discipline that is very much alive, growing and changing. It is a fascinating and exciting subject area, playing a major role in the modern world. It is essential for the advancement of modern technology, the sciences, medicine, economics and education. There is a growing use of mathematical techniques in the arts and the humanities. It is required in the fields of data processing, operational research, statistics and computing. Thus there is a need for mathematicians in industry, commerce, the public services, research establishments, administration and management. It is a popular choice and approximately a third of our Sixth Form students study Mathematics. The Mathematics staff are highly qualified and committed teachers, keenly interested in the progress of each student. However, the study of Mathematics at this level requires dedication and hard work on the part of the student and it is these qualities which will determine your degree of success. The courses offered are selected from the MEI Structured Mathematics syllabus and are acceptable as suitable entry qualifications for universities and colleges of Higher Education. A grade A or A* in GCSE Mathematics is essential for students choosing both Mathematics and Further Mathematics.

Future opportunities

You could take this course with an Advanced GCE in Mathematics to support entry to higher education in areas Mathematics, related areas such as Electronics, Economics, Physics or more general higher education courses. With further training, you could go into a job related to Mathematics such as an Accountant, Engineer or Financial Adviser. The course also helps you develop the skills, understanding and knowledge that many employers across lots of industries are looking for, especially in the economic and engineering sectors.
