Bricklaying Level 3 Diploma at West Lancashire College

Course description

Bricklaying is one of the traditional trades both in the UK and around the world - Sir Winston Churchill is known to have enjoyed laying bricks and building walls during his lifetime. Those studying bricklaying will learn a variety of skills to enable them to build, repair and maintain the country's housing stock. Our qualifications are aimed at people wishing to learn some skills in bricklaying, to progress on to becoming skilled in their chosen trade, or to progress through an apprenticeship and work towards becoming a master craftsman.

Course content

Much of the coursework is practical, working in the bricklaying department to become a competent bricklayer. Theory is covered in order to assist and support the practical work. Flexible learning techniques are used to deliver theory, which include learning packages, group work, projects/assignments, demonstrations and videos.

All students will study the following:

You programme of study will consist of a Level 3 Diploma in Bricklaying, Functional skills Maths and English, Enrichment activities and tutorials

Areas covered include:

> Health, safety and welfare in construction

> Principles of organising, planning and pricing construction work

> Repair and maintain masonry structures

> Constructing radial and battered brickwork

> Carrying out decorative and reinforced brickwork

> Constructing fireplaces and chimneys

Functional Skills:

Level 1 or 2 or GCSE in Mathematics
Level 1 or 2 or GCSE in Communication

Enrichment activities:

Fun sports activities and competitions
Fun trips
Educational trips
Industry visitors

One to one target setting
Group discussions
College functions

All learners must have a recognised Maths and English qualification

All students must purchase the relevant kit prior to starting the course. Costs will be discussed at the enrolment and during the college induction.

Hi – vis vest will be supplied by the college

Hi – vis vest and ID badges must be worn at all times

Learners will undertake a period of work experience appropriate to your course as part of the programme of study.

Maths and English will be part of your programme of study and you will study qualifications in Maths and English, appropriate to your level of ability, alongside your chosen course.

Entry requirements

Learners must hold a Level 2 qualification in Bricklaying.
