Spanish IB at Bridgwater College

Course description

The main focus of the Spanish courses at both Higher and Standard level is language acquisition and the development of skills which lead to a high degree of competence in Spanish and the opportunity to explore the culture using the language. The Higher level course is designed for students who have already demonstrated exceptional linguistic ability, who intend to study Spanish at university.

Course content

Through Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing in a range of registers students will cover the following aspects of the culture:

In addition to that, at HL students must read two works of literature (a novel, a play, a collection of short stories or a selection of poems).

Entry requirements

For Higher level, students must have achieved an A or A* in GCSE Spanish and for Standard level a B grade or above is required. It is also essential to have an interest in the current affairs and cultures of Spanish speaking countries.


At the end of the second year you will be assessed both internally and externally in reading, writing and speaking.

Future opportunities

The higher and standard level courses are ideal preparation for university study of Spanish, Modern Languages, Classics, European/Latin American/American Studies or International Business/Law. In the global era, knowledge of a foreign language at any level offers a clear advantage in any career.
