Mathematics GCSE at Merrill Academy

Course description

GCSE Mathematics covers a wide range of basic mathematical knowledge and skills, grouped into four areas:

  • Statistics and Probability
  • Number and Algebra
  • Geometry and Measures
  • Functional Skills which requires students to apply the mathematics to a range of problems in the above area

Course content

There are 2 papers, both of which are sat in June of Year 11. Paper 1 is a noncalculator paper, and Paper 2 is a calculator paper. The 4 areas which are covered are:

  • Statistics and Probability
  • Number and Algebra
  • Geometry and Measures
  • Functional Skills
  • All 4 areas are covered in each paper.

Assessment

You will sit 2 papers in June of year 11; one non-calculator & one calculator

30-40% of the papers will assess functional skills

Grades G– C are available at Foundation tier

Grades A* - D are available at Higher tier

Future opportunities

Completing this course at grade ‘C’ is a requirement for progression to Level 3 studies. GCSE Maths at grade ‘C’ is a key requirement when applying for most jobs and employers expect this as a minimum grade.
