Foundation Learning (Step Up) (Entry Level and Level 1) at New College Swindon

Course description

Are you aged 16-19 and looking for help with finding your direction in work or study?

If you have left school and haven’t got a job or a place on a course, ‘Step Up’ will help you work out where you want to go next- and give you some practical skills and qualifications to get there.

‘Step Up’ is a course that will help you with practical skills such as CV–writing and interview techniques,

and you will get the chance to take part in some taster sessions of career paths that you might be interested in following.

You will work on your English and Maths skills to help you towards your next steps. You will also develop the important personal skills that employers and colleges look for, such as teamwork, assertiveness and decision-making.

If you are an ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) learner, you may be offered the opportunity to study the Step Up programme alongside your ESOL course.

Course content

You will learn by group discussions, individual work, 1:1 sessions and practical activities. You will study a total of 14 hours a week, in 4 main areas:

  • Short vocational courses – a different choice each term including: Sport, Cooking, Care and Public Services
  • Personal development
  • Functional Skills in English, Maths (and ICT if you choose to study it)
  • Tutorial sessions (including 1:1 meetings with your tutor)

Each area has a number of credits which will contribute towards your qualification.

Most of the programme will be assessed by the work you do during the course.

You will have to work together or on your own, do short projects and assignments, take part in discussions and complete challenges.

Future opportunities

During the course you will be helped to create and follow a plan for where you want to go next. This might be to another college course, training or into work. We will help with the applications to college or work that you make during or at the end of the course.

You will be working towards an Entry 3 or Level 1 Award, Certificate or Diploma in Progression. You can also get qualifications in IT, English and Maths.
