Dance A Level at Strode College
This course is for students who enjoy expressing themselves through dance and who wish to study dance in depth. You will learn through an exciting blend of practical and theory, with many opportunities to perform solo and group pieces in Strode Theatre.
Areas of study include: practical dance training and the study of professional set dance works; theory of anatomy and physiology; choreography; and dance history, analysis and appreciation.
Students are advised to take no more than two A Level visual or performance related subjects due to the quantity of coursework, deadlines and exam dates (Art and Design, Graphic Design, Textiles, Photography, Music, Music Technology, Drama and Theatre
The course includes theatre visits to see a range of live dance performances and you will have opportunities to take part in workshops led by visiting professionals - previous workshops have included the world renowned Rambert Dance Company and West End performer,
We have fantastic performance and rehearsal spaces at Strode College. Strode Theatre is a professional mixed arts venue which seats an audience of 350 people; we have a dance studio with a sprung floor and two smaller rehearsal studios. We have our own dance
company, 'Gravit8', which gives students opportunities to choreograph and perform works at other regional venues including Tacchi-Morris Arts Centre and Octagon Theatre, Yeovil.
5 GCSEs at grades A* - C or equivalent. You need to have some practical experience of dance - ballet, jazz, modern or contemporary. Enthusiasm and commitment are essential.
The course will be assessed by written exam and performances.
A Level Dance is an ideal foundation in dance and fully prepares students for study at degree level. It can also lead to higher level study in other arts subjects.
Recent students have progressed to the Northern School of Contemporary Dance, Bath Spa University, Roehampton Institute at the University of Surrey, De Montfort University, the University of Surrey and Dartington College of Arts.
