This qualification provides an excellent vehicle for learners who have an interest in the hospitality and catering industry to progress to higher awards such as NVQ at Level 1. It's suitable for candidates from all backgrounds.
The core units cover the essentials of the industry, interpersonal skills, communications at work and working relationships. The additional specialised food preparation and cooking unit will ensure that candidates are able to prepare, cook and present meals for a variety of occasions.
It will also develop their knowledge of the catering industry as well as the skills that are needed. It covers the use of basic kitchen equipment and assisting in the preparation of cold and hot foods.
In order for learners to achieve this award they need to achieve a total of five units. Learners will undertake and pass a total of three assessments, two practical and one theory assessment. These are as follows:
1. Practical skills assessment of the food preparation and cooking unit
2. Practical assignment with knowledge requirements tested through the separate theory test in conjunction with records of visits to local hospitality and catering outlets.
3. Theory test externally marked 45 minute short test paper
Candidates will develop knowledge and practical skills which provide a natural progression towards further vocational studies such as NVQ Food Preparation and Cooking.
WHAT WILL I BE MAKING?
Cold food such as: sandwiches, salads, desserts, hors d'oeuvres, vegetables and fruit
Hot food such as: vegetables, pizza, soup, jacket potatoes, snack items, pastry items, cakes, bread and reheating food.
