French AS & A Level at Coloma Convent Girls' School
The course aims to develop the language skills, knowledge and understanding acquired at GCSE to enable students to communicate confidently and effectively in French for a range of purposes. Studying French in the Sixth Form will enhance students’ employment prospects and prepare them for further study.
Through the study of a variety of relevant and interesting topics, the course will provide a vital insight into the culture and society of France, our nearest European neighbour, and other French-speaking countries. Students will develop their interest in, and enthusiasm for, language learning. They will improve their spoken and written expression, analyse factual and fictional texts and communicate their opinions in French. They will find the course both intellectually stimulating and enjoyable.
The chosen pathway requirements and at least Grade B in GCSE French.
All language skills are assessed as follows:
- Unit 1 Listening, Reading, Writing - 40% of AS marks
- Unit 2 Writing - 30% of AS marks
- Unit 3 Speaking - 30% of AS marks
A level examination
- Unit 1 Listening, Reading, Writing - 40% of A level marks
- Unit 2 Writing - 30% of A level marks
- Unit 3 Speaking - 30% of A level marks
Further opportunities for language enhancement are offered through magazine subscription, study days, films and on-line resources. Many students take part in our Year 13 visit to Paris.
Language learning at A level improves job and career prospects, and graduate unemployment amongst linguists is very low. Many students go on to study one or more foreign languages at university, often in the context of a combined course with another subject such as History, English Literature, Science or Business.
