Content
Unit1 - Materials components and application
There are 3 sections to this unit, but also candidates will consider nutrition in the human context:
- Section A - Materials and components (eg. nutrients, food additives)
- Section B - Design and market influences (eg. dietary planning, issues affecting the design of new products , design in practice)
- Section C - Processes and manufacture (eg. food safety and hygiene, food labelling)
Unit 2 - Learning through design and making
This unit is a piece of centre-assessed coursework which focuses on a design folder and the handling of food as a material. Candidates will investigate a problem, develop ideas, make, test and evaluate products.


Unit 3 - Design and Manufacture
There are 3 sections to this unit, but also candidates will consider food science, processes and manufacture.
- Section A - Materials and components (eg. nutritional principles, interaction of food materials under different conditions, manipulating and combining food materials in food processing, the effects of micro-organisms and enzymes)
- Section B - Design and market influences (eg. product development and marketing)
- Section C - Processes and manufacture (eg. preservation of food, systems and control in the food industry
Unit 4 - Design and Making practice
This unit is a piece of centre-assessed coursework which focuses on a design folder and the handling of food as a material. Candidates will clarify a problem, produce an action plan, develop a design proposal, manufacture/model products, test and evaluate products.

Entry requirements

Grade C or above in GCSE Food Technology or equivalent and Science.
