Mathematics AS level at Nottingham Girl's Academy
If you enjoy mathematics, want to build on what you did at GCSE and also want to discover new areas such as differentiation, integration and mathematical proof, then this is the course for you. You will be encouraged to think more logically, and shown how to express these thoughts properly on paper to provide a convincing argument.
You will increase your understanding of topics such as quadratic graphs and equations, inequalities, coordinate geometry and simultaneous equations. At the same time you will be introduced to brand new areas of mathematics such as differentiation, integration and mathematical proof. As well as pure mathematic modules, there is an applied element to the course in which you have the opportunity to solve real life problems using mathematical skills you have learnt.
Units covered at AS
- Pure core 1 (calculator not permitted).
- Pure core 2.
- Decision 1 or statistics 1 or mechanics 1.

Students with a higher qualification in mathematics are respected by employers of nearly any business as it demonstrates an ability to think logically, to solve problems and to grasp difficult, often abstract, concepts. Mathematics is particularly relevant to careers in finance, engineering, science and research, computer programming and construction.
