Spanish AS/A level at Hatch End High School

Course description

This course is for keen linguists who have enjoyed expressing themselves in Spanish at GCSE and want to develop their language skills, as well as having an interest in Spain and Spanish-speaking countries.

Course content

In Year 12 through the areas of artistic cultural, social issues and trends of Spain and the Spanish-speaking world you will develop your language skills and consolidate your knowledge of grammar. You will also study a text and film. In Year 13 you will focus in depth on cultural, social and political issues of Spain and the Spanish-speaking world as well as studying a text/play or film.

How will I be taught?

Diverse methods to deliver all four skills (speaking, listening, reading, writing). Newspapers, magazines, TV, films and plays will help you acquire language on contemporary issues.

Entry requirements

6 GCSE grades A*-C/9-5 to include Maths & English Language at grade C+/5+, plus a B+/6+ grade in GCSE Spanish.

Assessment

Year 12 AS level: Listening Reading and writing 45%,Writing 25% Speaking 30%.

Year 13: A level Listening, Reading and Writing 50% Writing exam 20%, Speaking exam 30% A level.

Future opportunities

Spanish is the third most widely spoken language in the world (after Chinese and English) and has become increasingly important as companies develop and broaden their links with Spain and South America. The world of Business Management, Marketing, Tourism, Banking, the Civil Service and Telecommunications all provide opportunities for language graduates. In addition to a degree in Spanish at university you could combine Spanish with subjects such as Business Studies, Accountancy, Science, Engineering, Law, Mathematics, Politics, History of Art and Information Technology. Competence in Spanish is also a useful tool in service industries.
