German AS & A Level at Heysham High School Sports College

Course description

The AS German course aims to take you beyond GCSE and prepare you for A2 and university studies should you wish. It develops all of your language skills as well as your research and independent learning skills and gives you an insight into the language and the culture of Germany.

During the course you will study a variety of topics:

  • Aspects of German speaking society (family/digital world/youth culture)
  • Artistic culture in the German speaking world (festivals and traditions/artists/Berlin – past and present)
  • Grammar
  • A German book or film

Entry requirements

The standard entry requirements for a Level 3 course and Grade B in German.


AS Level:

  • Unit 1 – Listening, Reading and Writing (40%).
    Within this unit pupils will be expected to understand and respond to aural and written texts. There will also be a translation exercise into English.
  • Unit 2 –Writing  (30%)
    The exam includes an essay about the book / film studied and a translation exercise into German.
  • Unit 3 – Speaking (30%)
    This will include a discussion about the topics studied throughout the course.

Financial information

Folders and other stationery are needed to ensure work is organised. All texts which are studied for the course are provided. Access to the internet at home or at school is essential. A dictionary is essential for the course.

Future opportunities

German is the one of the main international languages of business and science. It complements a wide variety of other subjects and will help to improve your chances of employment in today’s competitive market. Many companies are looking for people with language skills.
