Travel and Tourism at Sprowston Community High School

Course description

Have you ever wanted to travel? Do you want to try something different? Do you prefer coursework to exams? Then why not study Travel and Tourism? Travel and Tourism is one of the fastest growing industries with a wide range of opportunities for employment or further study at degree level. This vocational A Level is an exciting course which uses local case studies to provide you with a broad understanding of the industry. This course will allow you to develop a wide range of skills that are important in the workplace and will help increase your employability. Information technology, research, time management, teamwork, communication and customer service skills are all vital components of the course.


AS LEVEL Unit 1: Introducing Travel and Tourism This introductory unit provides students with an understanding of one of the world’s fastest growing industries. Students will investigate the reasons for the rapid growth in the modern travel and tourism industry.

Unit 2: Customer Service in Travel and Tourism Students will learn about the importance of customer service in travel and tourism and will visit a local organisation in order to review the customer service delivery. Students will also have the opportunity to develop their own customer service skills and learn how to handle a customer complaint.

Unit 3: Travel Destinations Students will learn about the major short-haul and long-haul destinations for UK tourists by researching a variety of locations and key features of destinations.


Unit 9: Tourism Development Students will learn about the organisations involved in tourism development, which sectors they belong to and the roles they play in enabling the development of tourism in an area

Unit 10: Event Management Students will work in small groups to plan, carry out and evaluate a real travel and tourism event. Each student will take on a separate role and will carry out individual tasks to ensure the event’s success. Students will have the opportunity to develop and use essential skills which are an integral part of the travel and tourism industry.

Unit 11: Guided Tour Students will investigate a variety of different guided tours available to tourists and consider the merits and deficiencies of each type of tour before devising and delivering a guided tour of their own.

Entry requirements

To study A Level courses you will need to have achieved at least 5 GCSE Grades A*-C in full courses including either English or Maths. C grade or higher in English Language.
