Business (Applied) A-Level at Deanery High School and Sixth Form College

Course description

The world in which we live in is dominated by both large and small organisations. A Level Applied Business is an exciting and interesting subject which can help you to understand the business world and how it relates to you. At AS Level, this course introduces students to the challenges and issues of business, including financial planning and monitoring. At A2, this specification considers strategies for larger businesses and how managers might measure the performance of the business, through Business Planning.

Course content

We follow the AQA specification, an examination board which is well known for its rigour and academic standards.

AS At AS level students study 3 units of work, all the units are mandatory and consist of two internally assessed pieces of work an one external examination.

Unit 1- Investigating Business: Topics include Economic conditions and competition, Legal, social and ethical issues, Market research and Entrepreneurial skills.

Unit 2-People In Business: Topics include, Job roles and responsibilities, training and development, staff motivation and retention, managing performance, the recruitment process, Legal, ethical and social obligations and Recruitment documentation.

Unit 3 – Financial Planning and Monitoring: Topics include, The legal forms if business, sources of finance, Business Plans, Resource management, Costs and Revenues, Profit and breakeven and Cash flow forecasting and monitoring. (Examination)

A2 At A2 level, students study an additional three units, one mandatory unit which is internally assessed and a combination of two other units (where one must be an external examination, units subject to change).

Unit 8 – Business Planning: Topics include, Market research, Market planning, Operations planning, Operations planning and Financial Planning and analysis.

Unit 15- Financial Accounting for Managers: Topics include, Accounting Concepts, Recording transactions and the finical accounting systems, Financial statements and Analysing financial statements.

Unit 16 – Managing Resources: Topics include, Methods of Production, Location, research and development, Continuous improvement, Productive efficiency and Critical path analysis.

Entry requirements

GCSE English Language & Maths at Grade 5 or better plus at least 3 additional GCSE at Grade 4 or better

Future opportunities

A-Level Applied Business is an excellent preparation for degrees in Business, Business Management, Accounting or International Business. Many students have pursued careers in areas such as accounting, marketing, human resources, research and development and teaching. All Business students leave more aware of themselves as a consumer in the modern world and, most importantly, of the power that gives them in terms of business.
