English Language A Level at South Axholme Academy

Course description

English Language is the study of the spoken and written language that you are surrounded by every day. Using new methods of analysis, new frameworks and a clear understanding of how grammar works, you will study the way language functions and changes.

Course content

On the AS course you will study language in its various forms and contexts. You will explore how language varies because of personal, social and geographical contexts, how language has impact on identity and relationships and attitudes to language diversity. You will use data analysis, research-based investigative writing, directed writing, discursive essays and original writing.

On the A level course you will extend the AS skills further by studying variations and representations of language in society, children’s language development, diversity and change in language. You will use a variety of analysis methods to study the styles of language use. There is opportunity for an individual language investigation and original writing.

Entry requirements

You need a Grade B or above in GCSE English Language and English Literature.

Assessment is linear. This means students will sit all their AS level exams at the end of the AS course and all A level exams at the end of their A level course.
