Health & Social Care AS A2 at Bishop Stopford CE School

Course description

Health and Social Care at AS/A level will give you a broad understanding of health and care principles, how the sector operates and the opportunity to develop skills in this area of work. The course is applied, meaning your learning will always be related to the health and socai care sector.

Health and social care is a huge and varied career area, covering a wide range of professions including nursing and midwifery. There are many opportunities for employment with training in the sector, or opportunities to progress to higher education.

Course content

During Year 12 (AS) you will study 3 modules:

  1. Effective caring
  2. Effective communications
  3. Health,illness and diseases.

Entry requirements

Five GCSEs at Grade C is the minimum entry requirement, although we recommend an average of 8 Grade C GCSEs.

Although it is an advantage, there is no requirement that you have studied Health and Social Care at GCSE or Diploma level to begin the course.


In this course two units are portfolio assessed as you go along (course-work).

In the remaining units, you will be assessed externally.

Financial information

While there are no costs for the course itself, there will be a charge for any group visits.

Further information

Throughout this applied course you will be given the opportunity to visit a range of health and social care settings. You will be able to work with different health and social care professionals. An important aspect of the course is vocational experience; you will be expected to complete a practical placement of your choice to support your work.

Whilst all our courses are compatible with each other, the timetable may limit some combinations.
